The America’s on a budget

My Ticket To Ride's Azure O'Neil has spent the last 4 years traveling around the Americas on her Honda Transalp. She has ridden from coast to coast of the US, up to Prudhoe Bay Alaska and then down the West Coast to Ushuaia, Argentina before heading back up the less frequently traveled roads of the East Coast of South America.

With a passion for nature, camping and a budget of "as little as possible" Azure will share route recommendations and tips and tricks on how to enjoy the beauty of the Americas, while keeping your budget in tact.

Anje – A traveller’s perspective on car versus motorcycle travelling.

When Anje and Izaäk worked in Western Australia on a four-year work visa they met several motorcycle world travellers and, being bikers themselves, they got inspired. Travelling Australia by bike during their holidays was adventurous and they wanted more. Decisions were made, money saved and preparations started to travel back from Fremante in West Australia (WA), to Goes, The Netherlands.

In February 2014, when the visas were about the expire, they set off on their motorbikes. Three days later, still in WA, Anje got off the bike doing 80km/h on a dirt road and it didn’t work out too well. It asked for a change of plan. "If we can not travel by motorcycle we will go by car". The best thing of changing to a 4x4 was the wonderful opportunity to travel from Thailand into India through Myanmar, an adventure of a lifetime.

Bart en Jess – Motomentals: Follow your own trail!

MotoMentals is all about following your own trail in life, following your heart and guts. It’s finding what drives you and sets your soul on fire. Bart and Jess Lammaing will share their insights about how important it is in life to set your own goals in order to live a life true to yourself. In our modern day Western society it has become easy to live the life that has been written out for you instead of wrestling yourself through prejudices, opinions and commercials. More and more people want to set out to see the world with their own eyes but are being held by their own limits.

Bart and Jess are not just travelers, they are motorcycle maniacs living only to discover the pureness in life. They want to push their limits, not only during travels but in riding, sleeping, discovering and enjoying life each and every day. At the moment they are busy preparing for an around the world ride, their house and workshop for sale whilst updating the equipment and motorcycles for a five year trip. In their presentation they are focusing on how important it is to cross boundaries and overcome your fears in order to live a fulfilling life. A selection of moments, each representing a limit that was pushed in order to prove that anyone can follow their dreams, if you set your mind to it.

Peter – Empirical results and campfire discussions about adventure motorcycling

Motorcycling traveling has actually been a long time addiction for me, almost a disease. In the beginning, I was able to satisfy the urge with a trip through the Alps, but soon I was surrounded by friends, all like-minded idiots with 3 rebuild projects in the garage like me, with whom I would go camping in winter just for the fun of it.

After many adventures in Europe, we could not stand the hunger for adventure any longer. To relieve friends and family from our endless talks about trips on two wheels, we started our blog: the MotorAvonturist. On the blog we inspire others to undertake similar explorations, focusing on low budget, ’how to’ and stories about bizarre adventures.

During my presentation, I will include you in a short version of our endless campfire discussions. Hardly ever is there only one unambiguous conclusion on how to handle a motorcycle adventure. Everyone does it in his own way. All of us are undergoing a learning curve and it’s extremely interesting to learn about someone else's.

Joris – The Eastern Trail Nirvana

Building and riding a route from Belgium to the Pamir mountains in Tajikistan, over unused gravel and sand trails while avoiding populated areas as much as possible. With these goals in mind Joris Ooms went to work which resulted in "The Eastern Trail Nirvana". An intense low-budget and 15.000km long nature trip with forests and high flats, steppes and deserts, mountains and rivers, all while riding his trusted and old Suzuki DR650. Deep sand, sticky mud, fords, cold nights in the tent and sweating in the hot deserts far away from shade.. All ingredients for a nice adventure were there in a rather short timeframe.

These rarely used trail sections provided wonderful sights which were recorded on picture and video. In this presentation the best shots taken from ground level or in the air will be presented on large screen with accommodating stories and anekdotes.

Nora – Adventurism mindset

My name is Noortje Nijkamp, on the internet also known as Nora. When I turned 29 I left the Netherlands to ride to Bali on my 2005 Suzuki VStrom 650. I did so only one year after I passed my driving test, without any offroad experience and without even having been abroad on a motorcycle, but with the right mindset I made it to the other side of the world.

Adventurism mindset
A solo motorcycle adventure does not really require the right preparation or the perfect gear, but especially the right mindset. By telling you some of the most remarkable stories of my trip I hope to share with you that you can solve the toughest problems with the right mindset. And how you find this mindset again after the biggest set back made you lose it.

Bert – Take the jump: 5 months New Zealand with a family

They wanted to see New-Zealand, but they're not big adventurers. They are 2 daddy's with toddlers aged 2 and 5, in their own camper. Yet they still dared to take the jump. How? A good planning and preparation were essential. Without compromising flexibility in their itinerary. And what about unexpected events? Even those were prepared for. The result was a very relaxing journey through New Zealand, despite some obstacles on the way.

Besides a view into their approach you'll also be treated to great anecdotes and beautiful images of New Zealand. What to do when your camper has a breakdown after only 2 weeks? How about school during such a trip? How to stay in touch with your 90 year old grandmother? You'll learn that their approach also works in other contexts. So who knows: you might even pick up some ideas on how to realise your own dream.

Bert was a physics researcher, a software designer and marketing manager. After ten years he took the opportunity to radically change course. This started with a trip through New-Zealand. Now he is Flanders's first travel coach, helping people find the courage to make their travel dream come true.

During the Discover Overland meeting you will also have the opportunity to try out a free travel coaching session yourself.

Trui & Gaea – Powerful Women: what kicks them into the world?

"Why do we leave this loveliest country in the world? What urges us to go east on desert roads?" wrote Annemarie Schwarzenbach in 1939 before she left Switzerland and headed for Afganistan.

Throughout history, women have travelled the world, each for their own reasons and from very different backgrounds. They crossed deserts, climbed mountains, dressed in men's clothes, kicked off prejudices at home and on their way, led expeditions, became monks. From some we know hardly anything, others left archives and books behind and became world-famous - although sometimes posthumously. Throughout time, women have always travelled. Even now we find women in the most impossible corners of the world, as a doctor, photographer or motor traveller.

What kicks women into the world? What drove them back then, what drives them now? What awaits women when they have the guts, like men, to stick their noses into some strange continent? And does it actually make a difference, that thing called gender?

Gaea Schoeters (author, playwright, director, journalist) and Trui Hanoulle (graphic designer, photographer) travelled together and separately, long and short, in a variety of ways. They share a lot, including motorbikes and a special interest in ex-Soviet and Islamic countries. One of their longest travels was turned into the colourful travel book 'Meisjes, Moslims en Motoren' (Girls, Muslims & Motorcycles).

Gaea and Trui give their own personal views on travelling and womanhood, both in the world of their predecessors and nowadays.

Leonie Sinnige and Peter Scheltens quit their jobs, rented out the house and left for what would become a 3-year motorcycle trip around the world. Riding their two trusty Honda CRF250L’s over 112,000 km on 5 continents through 56 countries.

During the presentation they will give you a seat on their bikes to ride around the world together. Jan & Margriet – 1001 nights

Between 2013 and this year in just over 1000 days Margriet en Jan travelled 125,000 km in their Toyota LandCruiser “Dappere Dodo” (Brave Dodo) through 43 countries in Europe, Middle East, Africa and South America. They will tell about how they selected their vehicle, how they prepared car, route, paperwork, inventory and themselves and how they organized practicalities like cooking, washing, communication, navigation and money. They then will take you on the trip and share experiences and anecdotes about the great moments and the challenges: what did they like, what did not go so well, what would they do differently next time and what did they learn.
