Nick & Beernt – Driving the scenic route

We are Beernt Berghuis and Nick Rogmans and like so many crazy stories ours also started in a pub with a beer (or maybe two). With childish naivety we left with our Golf 2 to the east and 232 days later we were proud to be in Singapore. On departure the counter already gave 327,000 kilometers, and at the end of the journey we could safely add 40,000 kilometers.

This bizarre road trip went through Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore.

The old Golf 2 with its 1.6 diesel that once produced 55 hp has kept surprisingly good. Even a collision with an Audi Q7 in Poland, 20 flat tires, a broken alternator, a rattled-off battery, and some other defects, were not enough to stop the Gulf.

The landscapes of the Pamir Highway, the beautiful nature in Kyrgyzstan, and the hospitality of the people in Iran were some of the highlights of the trip. But each country had new adventures to offer which made it too much to mention.

We have camped as much as possible since we like it. We had enough equipment with us and could survive for three weeks on our stock of canned food, if only we had water. In the big cities we have mainly used hostels and homestays where every time new people meet.

During Discover Overland we take you on a journey and we relive the trip to Singapore.
